My name is Brian Oliver. If I were to classify myself as a vehicle, I would be a crossover hybrid monster truck. I am part blogger, part graphic designer, part coder, part web designer, and last but not least the resident “IT Guy” everywhere I go.
I specialize in content management driven websites using open source software like Joomla. I am open to building websites in any other content management system (CMS) like WordPress, especially if my clients have a preference. I have been learning more and more about WordPress everyday and to be honest…I am thoroughly impressed! No more than a year ago, I would have told you that WordPress is just for blogging and you couldn’t build a “real website” with it if you tried. No offense guys and girls, like I said, I just started using WordPress as a content management system just last year. I have been very involved in Joomla 1.5 for about 2 years now and for certain applications I will always use Joomla but WordPress most certainly has it’s place in my tool box from here on out.
Another side note: Some may wonder why I decided to go with the domain name OliveriDesign.com (or sometimes the username BrianOliveri). Here is a quick background just in case you are wondering why I went with Oliveri Design.
Prior to coming to the United States from Sicily, my Great Grandfather’s name was Paulo Oliveri. He came to this country by himself at age 8 and started his life here in the land of opportunity. After coming through Ellis Island in New York, they knocked off the “o” in Paulo and the “i” in Oliveri and made his new name Paul Oliver. He was told “it will sound more American son”…maybe not those exact words but I’m sure it was close. Some people in the family beg to differ and say they changed his name in grade school but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Later on in my Great Grandfather’s life he became a successful entrepreneur in upstate New York. In fact, he opened a supermarket, which was a cutting edge business back then because they really didn’t exist yet. My Grandfather (Joe Oliver) also opened a supermarket that my Father (Paul Oliver II) and Uncle (Joe Oliver Jr.) worked in as young boys. The closest I got to working in the family business was selling produce to restaurants as a young boy with my Grandpa Joe and working in the auction business early on with my Granddaddy (my Mom’s Dad), which in my opinion was invaluable experience.
In order to honor my heritage and represent my families true name I went with the name Oliveri Design rather than some other generic name. Also, since the username BrianOliver was not available on Twitter I have gone with the username BrianOliveri…why not!
